International Volunteer Day (IVD), 5th December |
 |
The international Volunteer Day (IVD) has been commemorated in Kenya on 5th December every year since 2007. IVD was endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution 40/212 on 17 December 1985. Since then, governments, the UN system and civil society organizations have successfully joined volunteers around the world to celebrate the Day on 5 December. |
IVD is a chance for Volunteer Involving Organizations and individual volunteers to promote their contributions to development at local, national and international levels.
Activities to mark the day in Kenya were held at Bomb Blast Memorial site and Kenyatta International Conference centre (KICC) in 2007 and 2008 respectively. The site for the 2009 commemoration is yet to be identified. |
Some of the activities during IVD are: |
- Exhibition to demonstrate the role of volunteers
- International Volunteers Day speeches by representatives from government, and Volunteer involving organizations.
- Contest on volunteer anthem, poetry and theme song for the IVD
- “Volunteers of the Year Award” gala night
- Free legal aid clinics
